Going Blue on April 2

April 1, 2015 | Brault & Bouthillier

« Going Blue on April 2 »

On April 2, 2015, as in each year since 2010, nearly 3,000 structures in more than 600 cities in 45 countries on 6 continents will be illuminated in blue to raise public awareness of autism. Some people will wear blue to raise awareness among their family and friends. Why blue? Because it’s a calming, comforting colour, and because it symbolizes the fact that autism is almost four times more common among boys than among girls. For more information about World Autism Awareness Day and the ??oeLight It Up Blue” campaign click here.

Autism manifests in two main areas: social interaction and communication, and interests and behaviours, which are often limited and repetitive in people with autism. Individuals on the autism spectrum tend to have varying degrees and combinations of symptoms; two-thirds of individuals with autism have no impairment of intellectual function. Autism is not an illness to be cured, but a neurological condition. Individuals with autism process and understand information differently.

Raising awareness is a positive action that can help parents, teachers, employers and others gain a better understanding of how people with autism perceive and react to their environment.
